| A brief word about Toning........ Beautifully toned examples that are completely original and have gained their colorful toning over countless years of storage in typical conditions often result in offering higher values. Archival storage was never thought of when most coins were pulled from circulation or stored in their original mint packaging. We are the beneficiaries of this aging as these coins have taken on brilliant reds, blues and golden toning which enhances their beauty and are highly prized by serious collectors who enjoy original coins that have not been cleaned. We will never clean or attempt to alter any coin. Each coin we offer is 100 % original as we have received it. Brilliant coins without toning may exhibit a fresh white appearance as if they were just minted but many times these coins have been dipped in a mild solution to remove the normal oxidation which may not always be colorful. Owner after owner dipping coins can remove so much of the mint luster and original finish dealers call them "dipped out" and these coins often fall in value into an lower grade level if it can be sold at all. It will forever carry a label of being a cleaned coin. Dipping a coin removes oxidized silver, which like rust, was actually part of the metal. When the oxidation is gone, so is a minuscule portion of the coin. Technically this coin is no longer mint state. ( the way it left the mint ) To most, a bright white silver coin is beautiful, but realistically once silver is subjected to air and humidity as well as a the many other chemical elements in our environment, it begins to tarnish. After even 5 years one should expect a coin to exhibit signs of this aging process. Once dipped the fresh new surface of a coin begins this process all over again and toning begins. Please take a look at the brilliant white coins in your collection, then ask yourself how many times has this coin been dipped and how much of the original surface and luster remains. As a collector and dealer of rare coins I strive to keep each coin in the condition in which I obtained it. By removing any oxidation from a coin's surface, you actually remove the protective patina that took years for the coin to develop. As a toned coin, it will retain this beauty much longer and actually lessen the exposure of unprotected silver to the environment. I always recommend buying naturally toned coins for within their beauty is a record of it being totally natural and you are assured by these colors that no one has cleaned or altered the coin's surface. |
